The Assam tea is named after the region of its production, Assam in India. This black tea is produced from the leaves of the plant called “camellia assamica”. This tea plant is a variation of the traditional camellia sinensis. However, it is a much taller tea tree the sinensis one.

Assam tea appeared in Britain thanks to the Scottish explorer Robert Bruce. He was interested in the Assam tea bush (camellia assamica) and introduced it in Europe in 1823. Sadly, Robert died shortly afterwards, but his brother Charles continued Robert’s affair. Therefore, Assam Loose Leaf Tea was introduced to the London public by the East India Company in the 1830.

Given that Assam Loose Leaf Tea received very positive reviews, it rapidly gained in popularity.
